How to resolve your baby’s nappy rash
Are you worried about your baby developing nappy or diaper rash? Or does your baby already have a rash? Nappy or diaper rash are very unpleasant for your baby and can often bring with it a lot of tears.
What are some of the causes of diaper rash?
-
Most nappy rashes are caused by skin irritation. Irritation can be caused by nappies that rub against the skin or fit too tightly.
-
Irritation can also occur if your baby is left in a wet or dirty nappy for a long period of time.
-
Your baby's skin can also be irritated by the soap used to wash cloth nappies, or by some brands of disposable nappies or baby wipes.
-
Plastic pants that fit over nappies raise the temperature and moisture in the diaper area. Heat and moisture make it easier for nappy rash to start and for germs to grow.
-
Nappy rash can also develop while the baby is on antibiotics (or if the mother is on antibiotics while breastfeeding).
-
Teething can cause baby's bowel motions to become very acidic and cause nappy rash.
But its not all bad news, here are some wonderful mahu solutions for nappy rash:
The best defence against nappy rash is a dry bottom. To help, follow these easy steps:
-
Change your baby’s nappy as soon as possible after it becomes wet or soiled, as a moist environment is the quickest way to develop nappy rash.
-
Clean your baby’s genital area thoroughly after each bowel movement with warm water and a little mahu Baby Wash. It is soap and sulphate free and will safely and naturally cleanse baby’s skin with Lavender essential oil to provide a healing and balancing effect on the skin, with antiseptic properties. We do not recommend baby wipes or soap as they can strip the skin of its natural oils and leave it vulnerable.
-
Always coat your baby’s bottom with a thin layer of mahu Nappy Cream, containing Linseed (flaxseed) oil it is excellent for treating conditions such as eczema, skin irritations or excessive dryness all while soothing and revitalising baby’s skin, Calendula: An antiseptic and astringent that heals and reduces inflammation, and Zinc Oxide which has cooling, slightly astringent, antiseptic and antibacterial properties and is effective for rashes, and skin irritations and allow the skin to dry. Always apply mahu Nappy Cream after every nappy change!
-
Let your baby kick without a nappy for short periods throughout the day.
-
When your baby starts solid foods, introduce only one new item at a time, and wait a few days between introductions. That way it’ll be easier to determine if nappy rash is due to a food allergy.
